The Patriarchs show a way to seek God and to share our lives with him. On Truth of the Spirit, host Patti Brunner discusses the Patriarchs of the Old Testament starting with Abraham, our Father of Faith, and then continue the blood line. I’m going to tell their story.  I will show you how they foreshadow Christ and the Church.  The Lord chose one man and then touched members of his family as faith continues to be handed down to the generations.  This model is used over and over throughout history and is the basis for our Church.  As Abraham connected with God and lives were changed so, too, those of the modern world.

Truth of the Spirit with Patti Brunner.  With this episode we will wrap up the series on the Basics of Faith with the Basics of Salvation. Man was cast into darkness when sin entered the world.  Over time mankind got ‘used to the dark’.  Jesus became man to become the perfect sacrifice to redeem the prisoners and set them free.  Through the sacrificial death of Jesus, sin was forgiven and man is restored through the Light of Christ.  Salvation is a free gift purchased by the Blood of Jesus.  We cannot earn it—we can only accept it—or reject it.  From the first moment of the Resurrection nothing stood in the way of the outpouring of God’s love.

Join Patti Brunner and Truth of the Spirit to explore Basics of Faith with the Basics of the Real Presence in the Eucharist. The Real Presence of the risen Christ in the Eucharist is beyond our understanding. It is an inexhaustible mystery. Yet the infallible teaching authority of the Catholic Church has proclaimed it for nearly 2000 years because God reveals his truth to us in ways that we can understand through the gift of faith and the grace of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Jesus Christ is present body, soul and divinity in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine. The doctrine of the Real Presence is found in the sixth chapter of John’s gospel where Jesus, himself, teaches about the Eucharist and about faith. We are not the only ones who need faith to accept the truth about the Real Presence; even Jesus’ own disciples needed it.

Join Patti Brunner and Truth of the Spirit to explore Basics of Faith with the Basics of the Laity’s Role as Priest, Prophet and King.  Jesus provides the example for us to lead an abundant life as Priest, Prophet, and King.  Jesus is the High Priest. There is a ministerial priesthood and a common priesthood.  A priest is someone who connects man to God and God to man.  According to our baptism, that is one of our duties as a Christian.  What’s a prophet?  A prophet is someone who hears the voice of God and shares what God says.  What is a King?  Someone in charge of others by royal birthright, and their duty is to protect, provide and expand the kingdom and to be a good steward.  Jesus gives us the example.

Each of the Gospel writers agree: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Baptism is the incorporation into the life of the risen Christ. The suffering servant, Christ, can relate to all suffering by mankind. The kingdom on earth as it is in heaven is shown to us with the glorification of Christ’s body at the resurrection from the dead. Salvation is the gift of the paschal mystery.

We are Christians because we believe. Continuing the series on the basics of the Catholic faith, this episode examines the use of statements of belief known as Creeds to keep us on track about the truth. Much of our faith is rather mystical such as ‘One God yet three persons of the Trinity’, and the truth of Jesus being ‘true God and true man’. The Creed specifically points out some of these doctrines that could not be known apart from divine Revelation to the Church. Patti Brunner goes through the main articles of Nicene Creed, to help you understand their basic profession.

One of the goals of the Truth of the Spirit podcasts is to remind you of the Spirit filled facets of our Christian faith, sometimes returning to the basics to allow you better access to teachings and actions of those inspired by the Holy Spirit. Please join Patti Brunner and Truth of the Spirit to explore Basics of Faith with the Basics to Reading the Bible for Catholics. The Church “forcefully and specially exhorts all the Christian faithful… to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ‘ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures” (Catechism #2653). Anybody can pick up a bible, open it, and start reading it. I want to explain to you how the bible is structured so you can understand how wonderful the bible is! The bible teaches us the ancestral history of Jesus true man. But it does more. It helps us to see that Jesus is true God. The Bible is a communication from God to Man. The entire bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit using human writers to record and share the truth.

On this episode of Truth of the Spirit we will give you some Basics on Using the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  For first time users and beginners it can be a bit confusing.  But we assure you after you listen or watch this podcast you’ll be finding nuggets of treasure of the Christian teaching handed down in the Catholic Church in no time!  Many Catholics of a certain age grew up with a Baltimore Catechism.  This was a “Go To” book for Americans.  However, in 1992 a universal catechism was published to be used internationally.  A monumental undertaking it is a promulgation of teachings that includes documents of ancient times through modern times.  We believe the inspiration of the Holy Spirit helped extract nuggets of truth to share with us in a manageable format of a single volume!  We’ll help you explore various ways to find specific teachings and help in using the resource information that you may not even know is included!  Patti Brunner has taught these basics to RCIA students who were brand new to the Church and to others who were searching to deepen their faith.
