A friend came by for prayer this week because she felt ‘icky’ after praying with a friend that was having marriage problems.  By the power of the Holy Spirit we immediately knew that the Evil One had starting oppressing her.  My prayer partner and I learned many years ago that demons often attack those who provide spiritual help to others.  Another friend shared with me that the deaconate class was told that the last few months of study before their ordination were a time of intense spiritual attack.  My husband and I always pray a prayer of spiritual protection before we pray for others and do a spiritual cleansing prayer afterwards—even after praying our nightly intercessory prayers.  There’s a link to some of these prayers in the description below.

Welcome to Truth of the Spirit.  I’m your host Patti Brunner.  This episode is God’s Help in Dispelling Darkness.  Today we will talk about the battle of dark versus the Light and share several things the Lord taught me about the ploys of the Evil One.

The Lord said to tell you, “Do not be unaware of the ploys of the Evil One in the current climate of fear and pestilence.  I have given the way to bind mute his harassment.  Close your ears to constant bombardment to sin.  Instead listen to the proclamation of the Good News, the Gospel.”

Recently the Lord told me, “Certainly evil raises up to bite from time to time but you have your “tetanus booster”—the grace of the Holy Spirit—to protect you. Fear not.

As I stepped up my support for the local pro-life groups the Lord reminded me, “The evil in the world hates you.  But that is no concern—it hates all the Children of God and seeks to destroy my children both body and soul.  As my people rise up and unite, the ploys of evil shall be defeated.”

Does studying about evil seem to be beyond you?  The Lord told me to teach 4th grade children, “There is a force in this land that is against God.  It hates God and wants you to hate God, too.  If you do not hate sin but come to love sin, the evil one and the evil spirits are attracted to you like moths to a light bulb on a summer night.  The evil spirit wants you to hate God.  If you are not sorry for your sins then other spirits will join you in your hatred for God.  There can be several with you.  Most people do not let them into their hearts. As long as you love God you are safe from evil spirits.  God’s angels guard you day and night.”

Satan, demons and other evil spirits are fallen angels who revolted against God.  They are our enemies who use their limited power to influence our decisions and to cause us great injuries-of a spiritual nature and, indirectly, even of a physical nature.   They use familiar knowledge of our weaknesses to harass us, encourage our sinfulness and seek infestation.  Satan preys on our longings and tempts us with imitations; he lies to us and uses things of the flesh and false spiritual things.

The Lord told me to tell the 4th graders, “Most people want only Jesus to live in their hearts.  Evil spirits cannot live in the same place as Jesus.  They are too ashamed of their darkness.  But when they live with someone who hates God, they are proud of themselves.  It takes a very special prayer to get rid of evil spirits.”  In Holy Orders, bishops are given the power, which can be delegated, to exorcise demon possessed people.  During the rite of Baptism there is an exorcism that cleanses our soul of all evil and allows the Holy Spirit to dwell with us.

The Lord said to tell the children, “You can keep them away by staying close to Jesus and the Eucharist.  The Lord God will never forget you.  You are His people.  You are in the palm of His hand.  He loves and cherishes you, forever.”

Fr. Leo Patalinghug of Plating Grace and EWTN’s Savoring Our Faith told my parish recently that the Evil One attacks us in the same order as when you sign yourself with three crosses before the Gospel is read at Mass.  He said that the devil attacks your mind, then you speak out his temptations, then they take root in your heart!

Jesus taught us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil“.  We should be watchers in the night, the time when God seems distant from us because of various struggles.  By the power of the name of Jesus we can bind the evil that lurks in the darkness, the evil that is ever ready to attack every weakness. The Lord told me, “The strong must help protect the weak.  The strong have been made so in faith, using the tools God has provided.”

The Lord said to me, “The Holy Spirit dwells with you and in you and protects you from all evil.  Evil will try to penetrate, but when you are filled with the Most Holy Spirit, the evil cannot deceive you, but must manifest himself to you so that you might know his face and dispel him to the foot of the cross.

I don’t think our generation has a comprehension of the power of receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit.  We know in our head that Baptism does something to overcome the original sin, the original darkness we have inherited from Adam and Eve.

The Lord told me, “The everlasting power of the Holy Spirit is more – it can be likened to the change of going from a candle burning on a lamp stand to a stadium full of lights.  The power of the light of Jesus to erase the darkness is similar to saving a drowning man by keeping his head above water or by giving a starving man a loaf of bread—it is life itself!

Jesus said, “I come to touch the hearts of the faithful to reach out to all those in need.  There are many in need.  The Father’s love calls out to them, but they do not respond.  Brokenness, pain, sorrow have kept their hearts closed.”

The Lord said, “The chaos in the world is a pattern well known. Despair, pain, uncertainty, confusion – these traits are sown and ‘fertilized’ by the My enemy. Sweet child,” the Lord said, “enter into my Presence and be set free.  Bring with you the children who are hurting.”

Without understanding we sit in the dark with our candle hidden under the bushel basket, not even attempting to place it on the lampstand.  And we certainly refuse to hear the Lord calling us to climb the light pole.

Twenty years ago the Lord told me, “Know this: the darkness is dispelled when each one first accepts Jesus into their own hearts then reaches out to one who lives in darkness—waiting for the compassionate heart to rescue them.”

Twenty years ago, the Lord promised, “The children of the world will one day look upon their Master and Creator and be blessed in the fullness of understanding of His Love for them.”

One day.  It could be tomorrow.  Or it might be the last day of time.

The Lord explained to me, “In these days it is difficult for many to lift the veil that separates truth and light from darkness and sin.  One moment of truth destroys the darkness accumulated in a life time. My child, know this, I have come to bring freedom to the captives of darkness.”  The Lord said, “I have come to bring Light and Life into the world so that once again the Father’s love will be held deeply within the hearts of those He has created.”

Our culture is confused about true freedom.  America has such a heritage of freedom, yet in this generation—in the last 20 years—we have aborted[i] over 20 million children seeking the false freedom from caring for children when it was inconvenient.  As we have allowed prayer to be removed from school in the name of freedom of religion we have lost the freedom to publicly proclaim the Lord. In the name of sexual freedom we have allowed depravity to seem normal.  In the name of marital freedom we have allowed divorce to become a plague that is destroying the family.  In the name of media freedom we have allowed filth to penetrate every home as decadent programming on television, telephones, and computers destroy moral fiber.  We are confused about true freedom.

Media can also be used for good.  Freedom comes as we bring to light the things that the enemy wants to keep hidden, such as child abuse.  The sinner hates the light because his deeds are done in darkness.  The enemy also wants us to keep quiet about the Good News.  Often we are embarrassed about how little we know about our faith and so we keep silent. One time the Lord told me, “Miracles are easy, it is the believing in them that is difficult” and so we have kept quiet.  True freedom comes as we share the awareness of God’s presence.

The enemy’s spiritual world is full of sorcery and the occult.  It imitates the true gifts of the Spirit with psychic hotlines, incantations and crystals.  Sin opens the door to welcome evil spirits.  Relying on occult power such as Ouija boards, horoscopes, psychics, Wicca, witchcraft, New Age, spells and charms “rolls out the red carpet” for evil spirits and are an abomination to the Lord because they rely on spiritual power that does not come from God.  Participation in such things must be swept away, repented and confessed.  If we do not fill that emptied spot with forgiveness and the presence of the Lord and his grace, the enemy will return to feed on the same issues that allowed him access the first time.

As we in greater measure participate in God’s Divine Mercy, we carry the needs of others in our hearts.  God strengthens us to do this.  The best way to strengthen a muscle is to use it.  By building up others we ourselves are made strong.   We are transformed a bit more clearly to the image of God.  God places his Light within us that we might be light to the world.

Don’t cower in fear of the darkness.    The Lord will protect you.  Jesus has delivered you from evil but prepare yourself for the meeting with the tempter.  Do not fear.  Do not run away.  Put on the armor of God and know that God is the great I Am.

By his mercy, God provides a heavenly armor to protect us against the principalities and powers of darkness. The Lord invites us to put on the garment of praise.  Praise is a holy garment that prepares us to encounter God. He also invites us to put on:  the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, shoes of peace, the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God and to pray in the Spirit always.

Truth of the Spirit did a whole series on the tools of the Armor of God that Paul mentions in Ephesians; check them out on the playlist on the Truth of the Spirit channel.  I’ll put a link in the description below.

God is the giver of good things.  Even the difficult can be a blessing because God pours out so much grace to counteract the ‘darkness’ that we find blessing—in the illness, in temptation, in the problem. Truly, sometimes our shell of busyness or worldliness is so thick that the only time we can truly experience God is when we are vulnerable due to sickness or crisis.

The Lord said to me, “Continue to have a grateful heart.  In joy, there is thankfulness.  In the kingdom there is thankfulness.  It lives on with love.  Seek it, learn it, live it.  Be grateful to those whom you encounter.  Be grateful for those who turn from evil and those who give you reason to turn to the Lord in prayer.

“Giving thanks is an important way to begin, and (thus) end the dark.  You do not always see the things to be grateful for.”

We may be quick to notice the “half-empty glass.  Recall the saying, “I complained that I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet.”  We can contradict the normal reaction of anger or depression to stressful situations by diffusing them with a grateful heart; if someone cuts you off in rush hour traffic, thank God that you have a car that runs and does not have a flat, and has a battery that starts, gas that propels and that you are not walking to work.  When a teen is struggling and falling into the traps of the world: thank God that they are building a witness of “once I was lost but now I’m found” and surrender them to His care.   An attitude of gratitude will go a long way to dispel the darkness in your life.   Know this:  The Lord does great things for you.

The Lord asks us, “What caused a simple fisherman to turn his life over to Jesus?  He heard the truth.  What caused Mary of Magdalene to conversion and receive the honor of being among the first to see the risen Lord?  She was in desperate need of healing.  After Jesus cast the devils out of her He filled her with love and healing.  He does the same for all who approach him in faith.

The Lord said this to me, “When Rick approached me I cast from him the demon and infirmity of depression then I set upon the task of healing his wounded heart by bringing up repentance.  Sometimes repentance seems to be first.  Each person is unique and I keep no set time schedules for conversion.”

The Lord said to me, “My kingdom grows in magnitude as my children say “Yes” to my will, for it is in my Children that I manifest my kingdom.  Can you understand that?”  The Lord said, “I created my kingdom to share my glory with my creatures – with man, with the angels and other beings of Light.  Know this,” the Lord said, “only darkness can cut away that which is your inheritance.  Soon darkness will end and Light will reign eternal.”  The Lord said, “My kingdom come.  Spend your days in joyful anticipation.  Fear not the darkness.  The Ancient of Days is upon you.  Mercy is given.  Mercy is to be had for the asking.”

The Lord said to me, “As the desert blooms after a rain so too shall the hearts and minds of those who have suffered the dryness of no grace in their lives be revived as the Living Water touches them and ‘soaks in’.  The ‘sprinkling’ has no effect but to rinse the dust from the leaves.  It takes a ‘downpour’ to truly nourish and set free the life process.  Many survive only because they have ‘stored’ my grace deep within them.  But, dear child, my desire is not just ‘survival’ but abundant life.”

The Lord said to me, Call to Me the children of darkness, of the night.  Send forth the rays of the Light to rescue them.  Watch the changes as life-giving water reaches the ‘roots’.  And then the nation shall bloom.  You are wondering what this has to do with you.”  The Lord said, “You shall build the furrow to carry the water.  You shall ‘seed’ the clouds with your praise and thanksgiving.  You shall “speak my Word in foreign lands and all will understand.”

The Lord said to me, “The concern for self is built on the concern for others.  This is the stone of the kingdom.  How rough or how smooth the stone will come from the weight of the needs of others placed before your own.  As I created man,” the Lord said, “I gave each an instinct for survival.   In the kingdom you begin to realize that your own survival depends on others.  As others are built up you also are made strong.  Sin and weakness begets sin and destruction.”

The Church is the visible Body of Christ.  It is our support system to protect us from the darkness and to pull others into the light of Christ, to share the Good News with one another.  Like coals on a fire, we burn more brightly in the Light of Christ when we are gathered together.  If we separate, our single coal can be covered with ash and go out.

Church tradition is meant to be a comfort and a path to follow.   It is like arriving at a huge stadium and we don’t know where to go, but we follow the crowd because those who do know the way lead us on.  Anyone who has a ticket can come in. If we don’t have a ticket, Christ sends someone out in the darkness to share their tickets with us.  They come at a personal price and the game goes on whether we are there or not.  If we sit in darkness in the midst of tradition, we can be lost like being lost in a crowded stadium.  All around us are people who know where they are and where they are going, but we have lost our connection.  As we observe the crowd and thus begin to focus on the “main event”–Jesus–we realize that we are no longer lost and all our fear fades away and our way is made clear.  Jesus will use the Church and guide us with His Holy Spirit to where we truly belong.

The Lord said to me, “As your mind is renewed and opened to Me, more and more will My Truth be made clear to you.  My Spirit is upon you, teaching you in wisdom and in faith so you may go into the world and teach my people. They thirst for knowledge of God but until their minds are renewed and darkness is cast out they cannot know Me.  This will change in time.  My love conquers all.”  The Lord said, “Those that cooperate with My Spirit will come to understand the meaning of life and death and will come to know the Father’s Glory as they join in communion with the ancients in giving praise to the Father.”

The Lord told me, “Soon and very soon, the obedience of the evil one shall be evident as the ‘frenzy’ dissolves and the dawn of day reveals the power of God, when the shield of deceit is lowered—indeed trampled under the heal of my Beloved One, the Blessed Mother, my faithful daughter, my spouse.    This Ark of the Covenant, the new Eve of mankind, shall crush the head of the serpent under her heel.”

Protection Prayer Before Prayer Ministry

Lord, we dedicate these moments of prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We implore you to place on each of us the Armor of God.

Putting On the Full Armor of God

Finally, I will be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might: I will put on the full armor of God, that I may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For my struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, I will take up the full armor of God, that I may be able to resist in the evil day and having done everything to stand firm.

I will stand firm therefore, having girded my loins with truth and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod my feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.  In addition to all, I will take the shield of faith with which I will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. And I will take the helmet of salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, with all prayer and petition.  I will pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view I will be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints; I will pray that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel.

In the name of Jesus Christ.    Amen. Ephesians 6:10-19

Cleansing Prayer Following Intercession Ministry

By Francis MacNutt in The Sword of the Spirit

Lord Jesus, thank You for sharing with me Your wonderful ministry of healing and deliverance.  Thank You for being present today as I prayed for others. Thank You for the healing I have seen and experienced today, but I realize that the sickness and evil we encounter is more than our humanity can bear, so cleanse me of any sadness, negative thinking, or despair that I may have picked up during intercession for others. If my ministry has tempted me to anger, impatience, or lust, cleanse me of those temptations and replace them with love, joy, and peace.  If any evil spirits, powers, or forces, have attached themselves to me or oppress me in any way, in the name of Jesus Christ, I command you spirits of earth, air, fire, or water, or of the netherworld or of nature to depart now and go straight to Jesus Christ, for Him to deal with as He will and not return. Come, Holy Spirit, renew me, fill me anew with Your power, Your life, and Your joy.  Strengthen me where I have felt weak and clothe me with Your light. Fill me with Your life, fill all the void areas in me with Your presence. Lord Jesus, please send Your holy angels to minister to me and to guard and protect me and my family, from all sickness, harm and accidents, and give us safe travel.  We praise You now and forever, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! In Your precious name, I pray.  Amen.
